June 2003 At
first glance it seems that Tilos has not so much to offer, but when driving
around to the more remote places, |
Studio (Irini Hotel)
When I checked the number of
places to stay which I already had in my mind. They were nearly all complete.
The owner of Irini hotel has also brandnew built studios in the port on
the hill. The very spacious tasteful rooms are equipped with a modern
kitchen (they thought about everything) and a very beautiful large bathroom. |
| Hotel Eleni | A very nice alternative next to the sea halfway the bay at the same rate. Very well kept rooms with airconditioning and balconies towards the sea. | |

Elpida (Ag. Antonios) |
A clean place but with not
much charm. The service being very clumsy. However the food was well prepared and not expensive: baked cheese (saganaki), paysan salad (cwriatiki salad), kalamares (kalamaria), fried zucchini’s (kolokuqakia tiganhta) and ½ kg of wine for 15 €. |
Delphini (Ag. Antonios) |
This restaurant charmed
us more than the previous one. It was excellent! Octopus in vinegar (ektapodi xudato) , fried cheese, freshly made tunasalad, dolmades, tomatoes and ¾ of wine for 15 €. |
| Sofia (Livadia) | A cosy place along the bay
with Greek sounds at the background (despite the football game on tele).
Service was very attentive. The appetizing meal consisted of chickpea croquettes (rebuqokeftedej), garlic dip with patatoes (skordalia), moussaka, meat balls in tomato sauce (souzoukakia), paysan salad (cwriatikh salad) and 1kg of wine costed us 25 €. The next day we tried ovenbaked aubergines with cheese and ham (imam), chicken in lemon sauce (kotopoulo lemonato), stuffed tomatoes (tomates gemistej) , dolmades (ntolmadakia), moussaka, 2 bottles of wine, we paid 52 € for 4 persons. |

Michalis |
A large garden restaurant in the main backstreet. The homemade dishes were tasteful but did’t left a special impression on us. |
Livadia (port)
A long pebbled beach covers nearly the whole bay. There are a couple of restaurants. Furthermore Livadia has not much to offer. |
Megalo Chorio
Tilos has only two inhabited villages of importance. Megalo Chorio is the second village. It’s very quiet and it has some cosy areas. There is a difficult climbing to the ruined Castle high above the village. I advise to visit it when you’re in good condition. Even the little abandoned monastery at the entrance of the village is worth to visit. There is a guardian outside because the monastery serves as storage for the army. |
Mikro Chorio
A completely deserted village since the 1950’s. It operates as a paradise for goats, snakes and scorpions. The church is good preserved and recently some houses are being restaurated, one of them operating as evening music bar. |
Ag. Antonios
A small fishing hamlet with 2 restaurants. |
Ag. Pandelimona
An asphalted coastal road to the far west of the island ends at the fortified monastery of Ag. Pandelimona which dates from 1470. |
Amali-Tholos-Chika-Gera
Scenerey desolated settlements in the south of Tilos. A very pleasant excursion. No facilities. |
