GENERAL

June 2002

The last few days before our flight back to Belgium, we stayed at Pythagorion. There wasn’t much time to explore the area. We rented a motorbike to make a couple of excursions.

.

ACCOMMODATION

Labito

Just for 1 night - waiting for the boat the next day - rated 30 Eur at the end of May (incl. breakfast).
The room was rather small but very clean and handy because of its proximity to the port.

Kouros Bay

The hotel next to the airport with a swimming pool is a very good place to stay. We were afraid it would be too noisy because of the proximity of the airport, but in fact we hardly noticed. The breakfast was of good quality. Everything you could wish for at a breakfast buffet was available. The prices were very moderate (45 Eur for a double room on a 3-night basis).

RESTAURANTS

Varka (in Pythagorion)

As we are fond of greek food and dining in general we visited restaurants as often as possible.
In most cases the open barrel wine is of very good quality.

This was our favorite. We went at least 5 times and always found the variety and the quality of the dishes first rate. Meals were accompanied by Greek music, though maybe they should buy a few more CD’s.
Try to have a table next to the sea while you sip at the wine or ouzo, and taste one of the following dishes: chickpea croquettes (
rebiqokeftedej, octapus salad (ektapodisalata), taramo salad (taramosalata), lachano dolmades (lacanodolmadej), kolios – salted fish (kolgios) which is excellent with a glass of ouzo, pork in red wine sauce (tsigaristo).

Dionyssos (in Posidonio)

It’s a marvellous place and extremely relaxing to have lunch or dinner at this place.
We followed the suggestions of the waiter who insisted we should have the fresh fish soup (with some fish of course). It was good but no more than that. We found the price (42 Eur) just for the soup extremely high. We were a bit disappointed; though of course this kind of treatment exists all over theworld.

PLACES

Pythagorion

Here you have the opportunity to visit a lot a archeological sites, one more fascinating than the other.
At least worth a visit are: Gymnasium, Evpalinos tunnel, Kastro

Excursion 1: Paleokastro-Posidonio-Kerveli

The route is very green with marvellous views. Posidonio has a large tavern (see restaurants) which is surrounded by clear blue sea.

Excursion 2: Paleokastro-Agia Zoni-Zoodochos Pigis-Agia Paraskevi

The trip to the monasteries offers panoramic views.
Agia Zoni is a bit derelict, but has a charming atmosphere all the same.
Zoodochos Pigis is spectacularly situated. To enter you should be patient. We had to ring the bell several times despite arriving during visiting hours.
The road to Ag. Paraskevi is enclosed so you miss too much of the scenery.

Excursion 3: Temple of Hera-Mili-Koumadarei-Chora We enjoyed the beautiful landscape and certainly will make this excursion again on a later occasion because this time we were a bit in a hurry.
The site of the temple of Hera closes at 3 pm. This was the second time we missed the visit (our first visit to Samos was in 1994).
A very large monastery (Megali Panagia) - which was closed – could be admired from different places during this
trip.
